Welcome to Deutsche Schule Melbourne (DSM)!
Deutsche Schule Melbourne (DSM), an accredited German School Abroad, opened its doors in 2008. We are located in the heart of Melbourne in North Fitzroy, Victoria, and offer the highest standard of bilingual education for primary school children up to Year 6.
If you are looking for an efficient and academic bilingual education for your child, Deutsche Schule Melbourne is the right place for you! The curriculum of Deutsche Schule Melbourne is based on the highly successful Canadian “Early Immersion Program” for bilingual schools and fulfils the requirements of both the Victorian Essential Learning Standards (VELS) and the Thuringia curricula, facilitating an easy transition for students transferring into the Australian or German school systems. Our academic focus is based in the area of languages and Mathematics. 80% of the subjects in the Foundation Year to Year 2 are taught in German. The proportion of classes taught in English gradually increases, so that by Year 6 half the subjects are taught in English and half in German. In addition, French is offered from Year 5 onwards.
Our vision is to help students realise their individual potential and become creative and confident participants in the global community. The international and family environment at our school prepares our children for an increasingly global environment and caters for families of German and/or English language backgrounds.
Currently there are 104 students with more than ten nationalities and more than 15 various spoken languages attending our school. One of our most important goals is to offer an optimised learning environment, which caters for the different learning requirements of our students through quality differentiation. In addition, we support the acquisition of both languages with remedial lessons if necessary. This provides students who have no prior or little language skills with the opportunity to learn in a supported school environment, and be fully integrated at our school.
Students are accompanied and assisted along their journey to become independent and responsible citizens of an international community. This is made possible through our extremely dedicated staff and a strong intercultural link to Australia, as well as our partner schools in the Australian system and the Central Agency for German Schools Abroad. Our curriculum is recognised in both Germany and Australia aligning with both the German and Australian education standards, and forms the foundation of our pedagogy. We developed our educational philosophies in recognition of student learning experiences to create an environment which fosters a love and readiness to learn amongst our students.
In addition, we offer to former DSM students as well as students with equivalent German language skills (Year 7+ students), the possibility to obtain the Deutsches Sprachdiplom (German Language Certificate - DSD II). The program prepares students for the VCE exam in German as well as for the German Language Certificate. The Certificate is a language pre-requisite to study in German at a university in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The minimum entry level is A2 (Common European Quality Framework) and will be determined via an examination. Find all details about the DSD program here.
